The Role of a Godparent

At a Naming Ceremony, godparents play a important role in celebrating the naming of a new child. This is not a christening, (a religious ceremony). There are no rules or prerequisites for godparents at a Naming Day. You can choose anyone who holds a meaningful place in both yours and your child's life, and involve them as you wish in the ceremony.

1. Commitments and Promises: Godparents, are asked to make commitments during the ceremony. These commitments can be made by answering questions asked by the celebrant or by preparing their own vows. The ceremony becomes more personal when godparents write their own promises or meaningful readings.

2. Role of Godparents: The role of godparents is to offer love, guidance, and support to the child as they grow. They become mentors, for the child. There is no greater gift than nurturing a child's life development.

3. Choosing Godparents: Choose anyone who holds a meaningful place in your child's life. There are no restrictions on who can be a godparent. Some alternative titles for godparents include Guardian, Honorary Auntie/Uncle, Supporting Adult or even a sibbling.

4. Alternative Names: If you prefer not to use the term "Godparent," consider alternatives like Guide Parent, Guiding Parent, Guardian Angel, or Honorary Aunt/Uncle. Supporting Adult and Friend-Parent are also good choices.

Remember that Naming Ceremonies allow flexibility, you can tailor them to your preferences and create a meaningful experience for your child and loved ones .
